CBSM Mission to Mexico

Day 7: Sunday, July 7th, 2002

(pictures below)

What a powerful day!

We arose early with the roosters to find that it rained here in Juarez during the night. The rain has broken the oppressive temperature of the last few days. We ate a light breakfast, and then shared in our own worship time with Peter Dunn leading us on the guitar. Children of the families coming to the church service were taught with some of our puppet skits and a light drama called "Sin Chair" Mike Payne did a few balloon tricks, and then performed in "Wise Man". We then joined the congregation in worship. Pastor David invited us up on stage to do some of our dramas, as well as having Cole Stephenson and Emily Franks give their translated testimonies. There was more worship, and then the pastors' message.

At the conclusion of the pastor's message, there was a prayer and healing call at the foot of the stage. Members of the congregation were asked to come to the foot of the stage if they were in need of prayer. Our mission team (students and adults) were asked to come and pray with those in need. Several of our students ended up staying almost an hour and a half after the service praying with two of the members. Our team was unsure of what they needed prayer for, due to the language barrier, but we just kept praying. After an hour, Pastor David came over and helped us translate the specific needs. The older woman was plagued with constant pain from arthritis in her right arm and shoulder. The young man had recently injured his lower back and was also in excruciating pain. We just kept praying for their healing. After another thirty minutes of prayer, the lady stopped our group and said (through a translator) "I am okay. The pain is gone!" The young man said, in English, "I am also okay. No pain!" We all just sat there for a minute, unable to comprehend what we had just heard. Then we just praised God for such an incredible demonstration of his power! None of us had ever witnessed such a dramatic, instantaneous healing. Way to go God! We were also challenged by the simple faith of these two Christians. They knew they needed healing. They went to the church and prayed - content to sit there until their prayers were answered! We all learned a lot from their example.

Our afternoon was fun - and busy. Sherry Jorgensen began giving the first series of eye exams. She saw over 20 adults and children - distributing donated eyeglasses tomorrow. We also have several people lined up for appointments on Monday. Several of our guys had a very intense and VERY HOT game of basketball. Many of our students also played a fast and furious game of soccer with several local guys. We learned our lesson from yesterdays agonizing defeat. The teams were made evenly with Mexicans and Gringos. It was a blast.

Monday morning we begin constructing houses with Casas Por Christo. We are getting up at 4:30 a.m. - to be at the construction site for work at 6:00 a.m. PRAY FOR US! It is going to be a looooong day!
