Thursday
and Friday were our travel days and from what Mathew had told us
the trip would be a rough one, so its safe to say that every ones
nerves
werre up abou t one thing or another. The seats in the train were across from each other and held two people a bench. IT wasn't he most comfortable thing but it was livable. The thing everyone most anticapated was the bathroom which was said to practically be ahole above the tracks...it wasnt. Because we had reserved thet rain the locals couldnt get on which made them upset. Once a guy even refused to let go of the train and clung onto the back until the condustor had to remove hiim. The train ride wasnt so bad. We al slept having awakened early, read, listened to ipods played games and enjoy the beauty of nature God had provided for us. and let me say...ti was beautiful. Very surreal.

We began two full days of travel early on a chilly, rainy morning in Lima by boarding a double decker bus about 7 am. The bus was really comfortable and we had great views of the countryside as we climbed to 16,000 ft from sea level in Lima. We stopped at the highest point and several of us hiked up to the observation memorial and took pictures. Breathing the fresh air was incredible although it was very windy and cold. We made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the bus for lunch. It was quite a balancing act for Candy, Janet, Robert, Melinda and Mathew. We made good time and arrived at the overnight stop in the early afternoon. This gave us plenty of time to stretch our legs, visit a tienda for snacks and drink some coca tea to calm any altitude sickness symptoms before dinner. The camp where we stayed was lovely and we stayed in three different guest houses. The dinner was great - the first fruit since leaving. We had a very early start on a chilly, clear Friday morning. After spending the night under heavy blankets it was a shock to breathe in the cold air. We loaded our gear and ourselves into two very overloaded minibuses for the trip to the train station. We had a traincar all to ourselves for this leg of the trip that started at 7 am. There was no heat on the train so it made for a chilly few hours while we traveled in the shade. They stopped the train for the conductor to eat breakfast and we got out in the sun to warm ourselves. We made good time to Huancayo where a bus was waiting to take us to Lircay. We decided to shop for snacks before heading out. As it happens they were having a 435 year festival and parade celebrating the founding of the city. They invited our group to a special second floor viewing of the parade. It was quite an honor and viewing the various costumes was really special. The
bus ride to Lircay was very interesting. The scenery was awesome.
GOD IS GOOD. The switchbacks and swaying and honking for oncoming
traffic and narrow roads made for a interesting afternoon. We had
a flat tire about half way. While the tire was changed, some of us
tried to get closeup pictures of llamas. It was a nice break. We
stopped again to look down in the valley at Lircay. We all were glad
that we would not see any more transportation vehicles for five days.
We will be walking in Lircay. We are staying in two different locations
and getting quite a workout hiking up and down hills between the
two locations, the church and the park. Oops. I think I have started
into Saturday, so I will sign off. In closing, the beauty of the
place and the people is awesome and I can not wait to return. |
