August 2nd, 2010

Hello there followers of the Peru team of 2010. It has been quite a ride so far and very enjoyable! Today is Monday August 2nd and also our first full day in the town of Huancavelica. The bus ride up was long and tedious but we made it safe....for the most part but im sure you heard all about that in the last blog. ;0) Today we woke up nice and early and had a small breakfast consisting of bread and jelly. Then we headed off to the work sight for the first time. We were working on the church we were doing ministry with while in the mountains which was called The Jerusalem Church. The first part of the day consisted of hauling clay bricks and bags of sand in a very long assembly line that led from the ground up to two flights of stairs. The church is working to complete the third level of their building but have never had the right opportunity. But together we were able to get a lot of work done and get them on their way so that was great. During the work time unfortunately my back starting hurting because I have Scoliosis (which is when your spine is not straight). It bad me feel weak and not very useful but Molly Jackson was there to remind me that it would not be good to push myself too hard because then I would be even less help to them later. She was right like she normally is and my back felt much better after a little rest.

After the morning of sweat and toil we went back to the hotel to clean up for lunch. We headed off to eat our meal at the restroom we ate at every afternoon and evening. I forget what we had but I can assure you that it consisted of chicken and rice! Mostly rice! lol We play a game at the restaurant where every time someone goes into the bathroom and comes out we doing something to welcome them back into the room. Most of the time it was cheering and clapping. But whatever it was it was fun and slightly awkward for the person coming out. Which just made it all the more enjoyable for the rest of the team.

After lunch and an hour or so of free time we went to the Park (more like the town square) for our first VBS. Team 1 was up and ready to go. We all played with the children when we first got there to bring them in and get them warmed up to us a bit. It worked. The kids were very welcoming and fun to play with. We did a few dramas and a dance for them which they liked a lot. We had the main part of VBS then crafts, a snack, and a game. Everything went great and they were very excited to hear we where going to be back for the next few days! It was so awesome to see the kids interacting with the rest of the team and just to see all the joy that was going around. God is good.

The rest of the night was just dinner and team time mixed with a little free time. So over all it was a very good day other then the fact that we had a couple of people down who had to stay at the hotel. (freezing hotel I might add) Christian and Sarah Montoya were both under the weather...and that's putting it lightly. Also Sally Stephens was not felling well either. But with lots of prayer they were back up and running in no time. Thank you for reading our blog in the life of  traveling team members of Cedarbrook Student Ministries. Also thank you very much for your prayers we appreciate more then you know.

In Him with lots of Love,
Stephanie Franks (with the great loving help of Christian Montoya) ps. thank you to him

Today we got to sleep until 7 (ok so some slept til 7:30 ) then we ate breakfast at8. Some of the boys don't seem too satisfied with the rolls, cheese, and jams that we are provided with every morning...a little lacking in protien...but that's just the way we like it. At a little before 9 we headed off to the Jerusalem Church to begin preparing for the building of the 3rd floor. 4 hours of moving a sand pile (which seemed to continue to double in size.) Then a truck arrived and dumped a large pile of gravel/sand which would become mortar...and guess where it had to go..Yup! the 3rd floor. We loaded piles in bags and made an assembly line. Next we were honored with the presence of 1,000 bricks and guess where they had to go...you got it!! The assembly line made it go fast. Even though its "winter " here many of us have burnt faces (due to beieng so close to the equator) Then off to lunch and No rice but spagetti something. We headed to the church to gather kids for VBS then off to the park. We had about 90 kids participating and so fun watching our kids interacting with them. Finished up and went to dinner (rice was involved) then back to the hotel for a free" evening . By the way it's the 439th anniversary of Huancavalica so at this moment there is a huge stage with a concert going on in the square. Wonder when the "bands" with stop..looks like ear plugs tonight!

Chow for now.....
